Best Dog Breeds for Truckers

Road dogs and heavy trucks – a match made on asphalt

Professional drivers know that they’re a unique breed – one that can thrive in an on-the-road lifestyle – and it’s no different for the dogs that hit the road with them.

If you know a trucker looking for a furry friend to keep them company, here are five dog breeds that may fit the bill. They’re compact enough to share a small space, they can get enough exercise on the road, and any could be perfectly happy curled up in your passenger seat.

Pug

Pugs may shed a little more than other dogs, but they’ll easily make up for their lack of vacuuming skills with loyalty and charm. Easygoing and adaptable to just about any kind of environment, the pug may just be the perfect road trip companion.

Labrador Retriever

This breed does require quite a bit of exercise, but if a driver can find a way to accommodate, it may be worth it to have one of these friendly, happy-go-lucky pups along for the ride. Besides, as America’s most popular dog breed, they may already be a part of the family anyway!

Boston Terrier

Looking for a dog that knows how to behave? They may look forward to stops where they can run and explore a bit, but the American Kennel Club says this breed’s manners have earned it the nickname ‘The American Gentleman.’ ‘Nuff said. (err… Ruff said.)

Bulldog

Docile enough to hang out for long hours on the road, but tough enough to make someone feel like they’re traveling with their own, personal bodyguard. Truckdog might have been an equally appropriate name.

Shih Tzu

According to the AKC, the Shih Tzu was “bred to spend most of their day inside royal palaces.” We may not have a monarchy in the U.S., but those same breed traits make them a great choice for anyone whose palace happens to have 18 wheels.

Rescue Dogs

Breed traits can be helpful to consider when choosing a dog, but they’re never really set in stone. So, don’t forget that there are always plenty of dogs up for adoption who’d be happy to curl up next to you on your couch – whether that couch is in your living room or in the cabin of a heavy truck.

If your customers love dogs as much as we do, they’ll be happy to know that you can offer Pet Injury Coverage* through Progressive Commercial when they purchase Collision. It’s another way to give them peace of mind on the road, and another reason why we’re the #1 truck insurer for professional truckers today.

He’s a lover of good stories and spends his free time consuming all manner of them, thinking about the one that he'd like to, one day, write himself. He also really likes fishing.
